The riff is played throughout the song except for the chorus and bridge.
The way I play with the riff and I think Brooke does too is along with Fmaj7, 
we play Am/C where we continuously open the 3rd string.  
Then to the Am where we do the same with the 3rd and 4th string.  
And this is how I play some of the unconventional chords:
Am/C:  x3221x   Fmaj7:  x3321x

Just to let you know this is how I interpret this song, 
but you could always tweak it your own way so it sounds good to you.
