Mike Rutherford: Smallcreep's Day VII. At The End Of The Day

Tabed by: Kevin Chow, Guy B Mauseth

(no bass)
The day is nearly ended hurry home to your bed
My nights are oh so lonely come and lay down your head

(Pattern 1)
Ab G F Eb Eb* Db Ab
The eyes of all our children growing heavy with sleep

Ab G F Eb Eb* Db Ab
And with one final flicker into a world full of dreams.

(pattern 2)
Eb Eb* Eb Db
C Db C Db
Oh I need you now through the lonely nights

     C Db
And when the morning comes upon us

Eb Ab
I'll be holding you so close to me.

(Pattern 3)
     G F Eb Eb-Eb* Db Ab
The grass is never greener either side of the wall

Ab Ab-G F Eb Eb-Eb* Eb*-Db Db-Ab
If I am here or somewhere many miles away

Ab Ab-G F Eb Eb-Eb* Eb*-Db Db-Ab
For I have come to realize nothing changes at all.

Chorus: (pattern 4):
C Db Eb, Eb D, D C, Ab, Eb D, D C, Bb
C Db C Db
Oh I need you now through the lonely nights

     C Db
And when the morning comes upon us

Eb Ab
I'll be holding you so close to me.

from here until the end of the song one play Pattern 5:
Ab, Ab-G, G-F, F-Eb, Eb-Eb*, Eb*-Db, Db-Ab

Note: General arrangement of Pattern 1 is that of a descending
scale; upon reaching the lower Eb, the next Eb* is played on the
octave above, from where the descending scale continues, so Pattern 1 is
Ab G F Eb Eb* Db Ab

which in tab form can be palyed as
G|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|
D|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|-13----------|-------------|
A|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|-16----------|
E|-16----------|-15----------|-13----------|-11----------|-------------|-------------|

G|-------------|
D|-------------|
A|-------------|
E|-16----------|

Pattern 2, tab form:
G|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
D|------------13-----------------------------------------------------------------------|
A|---------------------16----15-----16----15-----16----15-----16-----------------------|
E|-11-------------11------------------------------------------------11-----16----------|

Pattern 1 is the base for pattern 3 & pattern 5 which are basically the same but
there are an addition of leading notes. For example, the notation Ab-G means
that the Ab note is a short leading note into G.

Pattern 3:

G|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|
D|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|----13-------|-13----------|
A|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|----16-------|
E|-16----------|-16-15-------|-13----------|-11----------|-11----------|-------------|

G|-------------|
D|-------------|
A|-16----------|
E|----16-------|

Pattern 4:

G|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A|-15---16-------------------17--------17----15------------------------17--------17---
E|-----------11---------11-----------------------------16---------11------------------

G|------------------------------------------|
D|------------------------------------------|
A|-15--------13-----------------------------|
E|----------------------11--------16--------|

Pattern 5:

G|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|
D|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|----13-------|-13----------|
A|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|----16-------|
E|-16----------|-16-15-------|-15-13-------|-13-11-------|-11----------|-------------|

G|-------------|
D|-------------|
A|-16----------|
E|----16-------|

Otherwise, Mike uses both bass and bass pedals (such as the Moog Taurus). It is
not always easy to hear how he plays the notes (bass alone, bass pedal, both or
a bass through some effect box) but we think that:
Pattern 1 is on the bass pedal. Pattern 2 is on the bass alone, patterns 3 & 5
uses both bass and bass pedal. Pattern 4 is on the bass pedal.
Anyway, it is a beautiful song which not many know about. I've looked for the
bass tabs all over, but with no success! So thanks to Kevin Chow with the help
of figuring out this song. The notes might not be perfect, but I think the
essence of the bass line is there. I welcome comments!
