Opeth - The Night and the Silent Water - Morningrise (1996)
Written by Mikael Akerfeldt

This is a tab for those folks who have yet to get Guitar Pro and want to learn this
awesome song.

Tuning - Standard (EADGBe)

Gtr I - Mikael Akerfeldt (panned right)
Gtr II - Peter Lindgren (panned left)

Mikael definitely uses a 12-string for the first acoustic section ('am I like them').
The second one, after the 'cloak of autumn shroud' riff, sounds like it's been done on a
six string nylon.

Intro Riff

Gtr I

---------------------------------------------------------|

The electrics stop for a second and an acoustic guitar plays Gtr I's part before Peter
plays the second half of the riff along with it. Both guitars then play these chords-

-----------------------------------------------------|
-----------------------------------------------------|
--4-------------------7------------------------------|
--4----7---3---5------7------------------------------|
--2----7---3---5------5------------------------------|
-------5---1---3-------------------------------------|

The acoustic plays something like this after playing Gtr I's part (hard to hear)
-----------------0----------0----------------------------|
-1h0-1--------0----0------0---0--------------------------|
----------------------------------------2--2/4-----------|
---------------------------------5h7-3-------------------|

And then 'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!'

And then this little riff

Gtr I
-----------------------------------------------------|
-----------------------------------------------------|
-----------------------------------------------------|
--3-2-0-2-5---------------------------------------2--|
----------3--3h5/7-5-3--2-------------------------2--|

----------5--2h4/5--4-2-1----------------------------|
----------5---------------------------------------2--|

The verse repeats on 'devoid of death' followed by the same interlude. After that, at
'whisper... all your words are misgiven' -

Both Gtrs
-----------------------------------------------------|
-----------------------------------------------------|
-----------------------------------------------------|
--2-----2--4--5--7-----------------------------------|
--2--------------------------------------------------|

Gtr II plays the bottom part of the last four chords and Gtr I plays the top.

Eventually this gives way to a little interlude that goes something like this.
Lead Acoustic
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
-------------2/4-0-------------------------------4----/7-6--4------------------|
--5--5/7--5---------5-7-4/5-4---4--------5--5/7-----------------7-5-4----------|

The epic acoustic riff goes again before giving way to

------0---------------------------------------------------|
----5---5-----4--2--4-------------------------------------|
--3-------3------0--2---5--7------------------------------|

(the second guitar plays the notes in brackets while the first guitar plays the B note)

After a bit Peter joins in with this (the timings are weird, listen closely to the song
to get them)
----------------12--13----10---13----12------------------|

-----------------------------------------------------|

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This riff is evidence that you can get pumped just by listening to some acoustic chords.
Well at least that's the effect it has on me when those toms kick in.
It follows a pretty basic pattern - Em, Esus2, Em, Esus2, and so on while an electric
fades in playing the same notes. For those who don't know what those chords are-
--7--7--7--7-7-7-7-7-7-----7--7--7--7-7-7-7-7-7--------|
--8--8--8--8-8-8-8-8-8-----7--7--7--7-7-7-7-7-7--------|
--9--9--9--9-9-9-9-9-9-----9--9--9--9-9-9-9-9-9--------|
--9--9--9--9-9-9-9-9-9-----9--9--9--9-9-9-9-9-9--------|
--7--7--7--7-7-7-7-7-7-----7--7--7--7-7-7-7-7-7--------|
-------------------------------------------------------|
The first chord is Em and the second is Esus2.

When the acoustics are completely gone from the mix Mikael and Peter repeatedly play E5
in the same position (Same strumming pattern, but ignore the B string and high E string)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ending Riff ('You. Sleep. In. The...')

This part is also in 6/8. Strum each chord with a down down-up-down-up pattern (8th
followed by four 16ths).
Gtr I
-----------------------------------------------------|
-----------------------------------------------------|
--9--11-12--14--16-----------9--11-12--14--16--------|
--------------------17-------------------------16----|
--7--9--10--12--14-----------7--9--10--12--14--------|
--------------------15-------------------------14----|
play the last notes of each (17-15 and 16-14) for one full bar

-----------------------------------------------------|
-----------------------------------------------------|
--9--11-12--14--16-----------9--11-12--11--9---------|
-----------------------------------------------------|
--7--9--10--12--14-----------7--9--10--9---7---------|
-----------------------------------------------------|
likewise, Peter continues strumming even when Mikael switches to a different chord

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Soft Acoustic Outro (I think these are the chords - I'm not very sure - and they usually
skip over this live anyways)
------------------------------------------------------|
------------------------------------------------------|
--4------2---0----------------------------------------|
---------3-------4------------------------------------|
--2--3---3-------2------------------------------------|
-----5------------------------------------------------|

Well that was a productive usage of two hours of my time. Enjoy the tab and please leave any
suggestions or corrections in the comments.
