Lesson 4 - Triplets

Yeh i start these up again. I got an email the other day asking about whether i was gonna do anymore or not an i thought about and said 'what the hell, lets go for Cal!' So here you are lesson 4 is here and lesson three is renamed so you can find it really easy!

Exercise one

To begin with, we are going to practice counting tripletsas we play them. 1-trip-lte, 2-trip-let, 3-trip-let, 4-trip-let.This will make it a lot easyier to place accents in awkard places and help keep you triplets even.

HH|x-x-x-x-x-x-|x-x-x-x-x-x-|x-x-x-x-x-x-|x-x-x-x-x-x- ||
SD|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----:||
BD|o-----------|o-----------|o-----------|o----------- ||

Exercise 2

Now we will Add accents on to beats 1,2,3,4 on the hi hat. This should feel fairly natuarl as you are supporting the bass and the snare drum. Make sure that you don't accent anything else but the hi-hats.

HH|X-x-x-X-x-x-|X-x-x-X-x-x-|X-x-x-X-x-x-|X-x-x-X-x-x- ||
SD|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----:||
BD|o-----------|o-----------|o-----------|o----------- ||

Exercise 3

Here i'll put he accents on the Trip of every beat. This one is Even harder as this is one of the awkard time accents that i mentioned earlyer on in Execise 1.

HH|x-X-x-x-X-x-|x-X-x-x-X-x-|x-X-x-x-X-x-|x-X-x-x-X-x- ||
SD|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----:||
BD|o-----------|o-----------|o-----------|o----------- ||

Exercise 4

Here is teh final constant accent that i'll give you. Fisrt of all its on teh Let of every beat. This may seem easyier as your creating a natrual dotted feel between the BAss drum and the Snare drum.

HH|x-x-X-x-x-X-|x-x-X-x-x-X-|x-x-X-x-x-X-|x-x-X-x-x-X- ||
SD|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----:||
BD|o-----------|o-----------|o-----------|o----------- ||

ExerCise 5

Now are you ready for this one? Here we move the accent aboutgoing trip on the first and let on the second. this is repeated on the thrid and the forth

HH|x-X-x-x-x-X-|x-X-x-x-x-X-|x-X-x-x-x-X-|x-X-x-x-x-X- ||
SD|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----:||
BD|o-----------|o-----------|o-----------|o----------- ||

Exercise 6

This is the reverse of teh last time. on the firswt and third the accent falls on Let and on the second and forth it falls onto the Trip

HH|x-x-X-x-X-x-|x-x-X-x-X-x-|x-x-X-x-X-x-|x-x-X-x-X-x- ||
SD|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----:||
BD|o-----------|o-----------|o-----------|o----------- ||

Exercise 7

Now we'll be playing An accent on every other beat. As a result you will create two quater note triplets across teh bar: one on one and teh other on three.

HH|X-x-X-x-X-x-|X-x-X-x-X-x-|X-x-X-x-X-x-|X-x-X-x-X-x- ||
SD|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----:||
BD|o-----------|o-----------|o-----------|o----------- ||

Exercise 8

THe same as last time but we shift the Accent so that it starts on the Fisrt trip.

HH|x-X-x-X-x-X-|x-X-x-X-x-X-|x-X-x-X-x-X-|x-X-x-X-x-X- ||
SD|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----|------o-----:||
BD|o-----------|o-----------|o-----------|o----------- ||

Well done you've learnt how to play triplets, accents and all, give yourself a pat on the back!
