It may be that they play this in another key and use a capo.  For instance you could use
capo on the second fret and play this in D (instead of key of E).  The strum pattern is
and syncopated.  I am playing this using bar chords except for the E, so you can express 
with muting on strum strokes as you wish. Comments welcome - I like to
