WALT GRACE'S SUBMARINE TEST, JANUARY 1967 - John Mayer

Tuning:Standard tuning, 1/2 step down. No capo.

There's a live recording with JM at Berklee College doing acoustic on
youtube(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdhsjFQKSzg), where you can really hear some of
these parts well,
even better than the record. Worth looking up if you're having trouble, although some
parts are slightly different there.

Intro (not included on the above recording)

Verse

(3) - notes in parenthesis are heard clearly on album, but not played live. May be a
second guitar, or some impressive guitar chops. Either way, these are optional (or you can
make the bass/low notes optional and play these instead).

Eb|--------------------------------|

*first time through on verse this first 5777 pattern is played as 7787, second time is
5777. This changes around, but do what works for you! Also, the string picking pattern is
flipped around periodically here:

                Eb|--7-7-| Eb|---7--| Eb|------|
                Bb|---7--| Bb|--7-7-| Bb|---7--|
                Gb|------| Gb|------| Gb|--7-7-|
                Db|------| Db|------| Db|------|
                Ab|-5----| Ab|-5----| Ab|-5----|
i.e. instead of Eb|------| may be Eb|------| or this (live) Eb|------|

or other combinations, mixing it up. He does this on any part of the verse pattern, even
on the recording. Again, do what you feel is right.

Prechorus
Eb|--------------------------------------------------------------------|
Bb|----0---0---0---0--------------------0---0---0---0------------------|
Gb|---5-5-5-5-0-0-0-0--0---0---0---0---5-5-5-5-0-0-0-0--0---0---0---0--|
Db|--7---7---2---2----4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-7---7---2---2----4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-|
Ab|------------------5---5---5---5--------------------5---5---5---5----|
Eb|--------------------------------------------------------------------|
             "When you're done....."

Chorus (play for feel here.. you can strum or pick)
Eb|----------33------33-------2-22---2---------|
Bb|----------33------33-3-----3-33---3---------|
Gb|----------00------00-0-----2-22---2---------|
Db|----------00------00-- 0h2-0-00---0---------|
Ab|--3--2--------023---------------0-----------|
Eb|--------3-----------------------------------| (x 2)
    "And his wife...."

Eb|----------33------33--------00---------------------------------2-2-2-|
Bb|----------33------33--------33-----33---3----------------------3-3-3-|
Gb|----------00------00--------00-----22-2-2----------------------2-2-2-|
Db|----------00------00--------22-----22-2-2----------------------0-0-0-|
Ab|--3--2--------023----320----22---0----0-0---3---0-----3---0------(0)-|
Eb|--------3---------------3-0-00-0------------------3---------3--------|

That's pretty much the song just in different patterns. Listen for changes.

I'm sure there are others who will nail the piano-y ness of this, but you could go
straight blues guitar adaptation over this, too. This is somewhere in between.
