C (x32010@1) F (133211@1) C (x32010@1)
  She walked to the mailbox
          G (320003@1) C (x32010@1)On that bright summer's day
                 F (133211@1) C (x32010@1)
Found a letter from her son
          F (133211@1) G (320003@1) C (x32010@1)
In a war far away.
         F (133211@1) C (x32010@1)
He spoke of the weather
               G (320003@1) CAnd (x32010@1)good friends that he'd made
                                 C (x32010@1) G (320003@1)
Said, "I've been thinking about dad
C (x32010@1) GAnd (320003@1)the life that he had,
                      F (133211@1) G (320003@1) Am (x02210@1)Thats why I'm here today."
                               G (320003@1) C (x32010@1)
And then at the end he said,
    G (320003@1) Am (x02210@1) F (133211@1)
"You are what I'm fighting for"
Am (x02210@1) G (320003@1) CIt (x32010@1)was the first of his letters from war.

          F (133211@1) G (320003@1)
And she started writing,
          G (320003@1)name="chord_x32010@1">C G (320003@1)name="chord_x32010@1">C

                   F (133211@1) C (x32010@1) G (320003@1)What a father that you'll be someday,

            F (133211@1) G (320003@1)
She wrote every night as she prayed.

Verse2
C (x32010@1) F (133211@1) C (x32010@1)
   Then late in December,
               G (320003@1) CA (x32010@1)day she'll not forget,
                  F (133211@1) C (x32010@1)
Oh, her tears stained the paper
                  F (133211@1) G (320003@1) CWith (x32010@1)every word that she read.
                         G (320003@1) C (x32010@1)
It said, "I was up on a hill
            G (320003@1) CI (x32010@1)was out there alone
                      G (320003@1) C (x32010@1)
When the shots all rang out
            FAnd (133211@1)bombs were exploding.
 G (320003@1) C (x32010@1)
That's when I saw him,
         G (320003@1) CHe (x32010@1)came back for me.
            G (320003@1) C (x32010@1)
And though he was captured,
      F (133211@1) GA (320003@1)man set me free.
                   F (133211@1) G (320003@1) Am (x02210@1)
And that man was your son.
G (320003@1) CHe (x32010@1)asked me to write to you
    G (320003@1) Am (x02210@1) F (133211@1)I told him I would, oh, I swore."
Am (x02210@1) G (320003@1) C (x32010@1)It was the last of the letters from war.

Am (x02210@1)And she prayed he was living
C (x32010@1)
Kept on believing
F (133211@1) GAnd (320003@1)wrote every night just to say,

Chorus
         G (320003@1)name="chord_x32010@1">C G (320003@1)name="chord_x32010@1">C

          F (133211@1) G (320003@1)
And so she kept writing each day.

Verse3

   Then two years later,

He said, "Mom I'm following orders
