There is absolutely no picking necessary, unless you are playing one part only, then by all means, pick away. The lead part is done with the tapping, and the dark ominous background rythm is done by slide and a very deliberate pull-off and tap ons. This section is entirely taps, but be very very light on the pull off so that it stops the string with your fret fingers, or you will get this twangy open string note that will make it sound sloppy.
