Ok, here is the deal.
To play this properly you will need an alen wrench. A pick will not do the job properly. You can do it on a guitar with single coil pickups, but it sounds much better with humbuckers.

Fret the A string on the second fret.
Tom frets it the third, but when I do that it sounds wrong, so I do it on the 2nd fret.
Rub the wrench back and forth six times over the A string starting with a rub towards the bridge pickup.
