For the "SOLO" Tom has a toggle switch in his "Arm The Homeless" guitar he flickers it as much as he uses the wammy bar while recieving feedback from his marshall amp. He does not hit an open a string because if you have seen the bullet in the head video you will see him bending down and receiving feedback from his Marshall Amp.
