Updated chords for Suspicion using basics from DJ Allen, with a slight
variation on his use of G and Bb. I've tried G (320033) and
G/Bb (x10033) and found it a nice option. You decide.
Also added extra chords at the end of the chorus, which also form the
repeat at the end of the song.

I've only added the effected parts of the song here. Repeat througout as
needed.

HOPE

C

you want to go out friday
and you go forever
you know that it sounds childish
that you've dreamt of aligators
you hope that we are with you
and you hope you're recognized
you want to go forever
you see it in my eyes
     F
I'm lost in the confusion
and it doesn't seem to matter
     C
you really can't believe it
and you hope it's getting better

you want to trust the doctors
their procedure is the best
but the last try was a failure
and the intern was a mess
and they did the same to Matthew
and he bled 'til sunday night
they're saying don't be frightened
but you're weakened by the sight of it
     F
you lock into a pattern
and you know that it's the last ditch
        C
you're trying to see through it
and it doesn't make sense
              F
but they're saying don't be frightened
and they're killing alligators
             C
and they're hog-tied
and accepting of the struggle

you want to trust religion
and you know it's allegory
but the people who are followers
have written their own story
so you look up to the heavens
and you hope to see a spaceship
and it's something from your childhood
you're thinking don't be frightened

     Em
you want to climb the ladder
you want to see forever
     C
you want to go out friday

                                  C
to cross your dna with something reptile
             F
amd you're questioning the sciences
and questioning religion
         C
you're looking like an idiot
and you no longer care
          F
and you want to bridge the schism,
                         C
a built-in mechanism to protect you
            F
and you're looking for salvation
and you're looking for deliverance
        C
you're looking like an idiot
and you no longer care
you want to climb the ladder

One of the many great songs from the new album, I just picked it out, believe it's correct. The bass notes on F/A and Bb/F sound a lot better if played on a real bass and/or a piano, but if you only have a guitar, I guess that's better then nothing...

THE APOLOGIST

tabbed by miKe. (ericseis@hotmail.com)
[second half of solo from Chris Lawrence]

This is a cool song played mostly by jamming on Am (open or fifth fret).
Just pile on the distortion and hit single or pairs of strings in the chord
pretty much at random. As long as you keep the 'feel' of the song you can't go
far wrong.

Near the end of the song, as things lose what little definition they had, just attack
the Am(V) and interject with little riffs and jams.

Little Riffs:

e|--7-8b-7-5----5---- or e|--7-8-/11-- perhaps e|-5-5-5-5-5-5-5---
b|-----------8-(5)--- maybe b|----------- this b|-5-5-5-5-5-5-5---

Am riff: (this is the odd organ backing)
g|--6-8--6/8/6--
d|--7-9--7/9/7--

End riff: (this is the riff that gets played in the final 'bridge')
g|------4--4-5
d|--7--7------

SAD PROFESSOR

Here's the correct version as played by Mike Mills on Rockpalast.

Tuning - some kind of open D.

E (bass string) A D A D D (treble string)

Performance notes: the double tuning of the 'b' and the 'e' to get two 'd'
notes gives a really ethnic kind of drone. Mike has strong hands - this
song is not easy to play unless you're a barre master!

Mix up and down strokes. Listen to the rhythm - these are the notes but
they're tabbed wrong!

Only 4 chords:
D (open) A(barre) G(barre) F(barre) )(E-shaped barres)

The transitions from A-G and G-A and A-F are usually slides.

In the chorus the song skips two beats (after 'i started a chapter' and
'everybody hates a drunk') so be careful.

If anything's wrong, correct it and curse me for being incompetent.

YOU'RE IN THE AIR

Here is a tab for some bits of "You're In the Air" - probably one of my
favourite tracks off of "Up", and therefore, the one no-one has
transcribed yet. (If these tabs don't look like they make sense, it's
because of the unequal spacing for letters in my e-mail program - in a
plain text format (i.e. in Notepad or something like that), the number
of dashes is fine!)

Some of the guitar parts are swamped underneath keyboards and organs and
other antiquated analogue noise, so I haven't got them (yet!).

The main verse riff that accompanies "you wanted a challenge that's
calling you higher" is something like this....

E-------------------|-----------------
B-------------------|-----------------
G-------------------|------------7-9--
D---7-10-7----9-----|---7-10-7-9------
A-0--------10---10--|-0---------------
E-------------------|-----------------

(The two sections are split up so you can easily read them - it's not an
attempt to use bars or anything musical!)

This call and response pattern repeats throughout the verse until, "You
say you want me..." which is then kinda blasted out by the organs and
bass. The general chord pattern is, however....

E-3---3---0---0---3---0----0--------0--
B-2---2---1---1---0---1----1--------1--
G-3---3---0---0---0---2----2--------0--
D-0---0---2---2---0---2----0--------2--
A-X---X---3---3---2---0----2--------3--
E-X---X---X---X---3---0----0--------0--

  D / D / C / C / G / Am / Am w/B / C

You may want to just arpeggio these chords loosely until someone knows
what the actual pattern is.

Then into verse two - "brighten the stars, the weather is lifting".
Verse pattern is used again.

The second chorus is the same until the end when there's a little solo
bit (dead easy) which I think Peter plays on his electric sitar. It
goes...

E--------------------------------------------
B-----------------------------13-------------
G--14-14-12-14-14-12-14-14-12----14-12-12-14- (last two notes performed
in a sweet hammer-on)
D--------------------------------------------
A--------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------

This is repeated twice and then a final time, with a bit on the end.

E--------------------------------------------|---------
B-----------------------------13-------------|---------
G--14-14-12-14-14-12-14-14-12----14-12-12-14-|-7-9-9--- (more
hammer-ons)
D--------------------------------------------|---------
A--------------------------------------------|-------0-
E--------------------------------------------|---------

This open A string then goes straight back into the verse pattern for
verse three - "I want the stars to know they've won".

Etcetera, etcetera.

At the end, as Pete's doing his 'cer-azy' feedback, etc., there is an
alternate bit to the verse pattern, which goes.

E--------------
B--------------
G--------------
D---7-10-7--9--
A-0--------10--
E--------------

And that's as much as I know! Please - someone with a sampler get rid of
all those organs and find out what the nice jangly bits are in the
chorus and the solo bits!

Lyrics:

you wanted a challenge that's calling you higher I landed on my feet by
crawling I
remember standing alone trying to forget you idling I hate to admit that
that's my
reference point but there it is you say you want me

I'm what you found I'm upside sown you're in the air you're in the air
and I am breathing

brighten the staars the weather is lifting the heavens love a love like
this it's pulling
you higher twist it and turn this around it lights from within it
dribbles your chin now
brings a smile I'm lost again I'm lost again

I'm what you found I'm upside sown you're in the air you're in the air
and I am breathing
you

I want the stars to know they've won if only to beguile the sky has
opened up again in
heaven reconciled I want you naked I want you wild I want the stars to
know they win
give me that smile just give it me just turn it on I'm lost again

I'm what you found I'm upside down you're in the air I'm what you found
I'm upside down
you're in the air I'm what you found I'm upside down you're everywhere
you're in the air
and I am breathing you

Say "keep within the boundaries if you want to play"
Say "contradiction only makes it harder"
how can I be
what I want to be?
when all I want to do is strip away
these stilled constraints
and crush this charade
shred this sad masquerade
I don't need no persuading
I'll trip, fall, pick myself up and
walk unafraid
I'll be clumsy instead
hold my love me or leave me high

If I have a bag of rocks to carry as I go
I just want to hold my head up high
I don't care what I have to step over
I'm prepared to look you in the eye
look me in the eye
and if you see familiarity
then celebrate the contradiction
help me when I fall to
walk unafraid
I'll be clumsy instead
hold my love me or leave me high
walk unafraid
I'll be clumsy instead
hold my love me or leave me high

WALK UNAFRAID

tabbed by miKe. (ericseis@hotmail.com)

(N.B. ~~~ = hold note using e-bow.)

Intro:
First just tap and scratch around on the fifteenth(ish) fret, then

a|-------------------------------------------
E|--5~6~~/11~10~~~~/5~6~~~/11~10~~/15~~~~

(this is all played on the bottom string with an e-bow, but lots of
distortion should do the trick just as well.)

Verses:
The chords aren't actually played. In the verses, instead Peter
just uses an e-bow and plays the root notes, i.e.

   (A) (F) (A) (F) for the Am F
E|--5~~~~/1~~~~/5~~~~/1~~~~-- progression
  and
    (D) (C) (D) (C) for the D C
E|--10~~~~/8~~~~/10~~~~/8~~~~-- progression

Peter doesn't this all the time during the verses, sometimes he'll just kinda'
slide up and down a string, making eerie noises, while the bass just thumps out:

   (A) (F) (A)
E|--5---5---5-5--5---/1---1---1-1---1---/5- and so on.

Chorus:
The Em - G - D chords are played as normal in the chorus.

And the intro riff twice to end.

WHY NOT SMILE

(Oxford American Version)
From: David Wagner (wagner@mindspring.com)

here are the chords and words to REM's new song from the oxford american
magazine, "why not smile." pretty different from old REM guitar in that
peter buck is fingerpicking and using new (or at least new to me) tricks
with chords -- especially A6 (X02222). at some points, he'll go from A6 to
an A, as if he's playing it like a "sus" chord. it sounds pretty good.
listen to the song, you'll know what i mean. any questions/comments? email

Why Not Smile?

Intro:

The intro is synthesisers, but I've found some jingles which, though not right, make an okay sounding intro.

  D x2 x7
e|-----2-|-----2---|-----2---
b|---3---|-------3-|---------
g|-2-----|---------|---------
d|-------|---0-----|---0-----
a|-------|-0-------|-0-------

then immediately into the first G chord of the main riff.

Main riff:

  D G A
e|---------2---------------2---------------3---------------0---------
b|-------3---3-----------3---3-----------3---3-----------2---2-------
g|-----2-------2-------2-------2-------0-------0-------2-------2-----
d|---0-----------0---0-----------0---0-----------0---2-----------2---
a|-0---------------0---------------2---------------0---------------0-
E|-------------------------------------------------------------------

play this four times and then:

  D G
e|---------2---------------2---------------3-------
b|-------3---3-----------3---3-----------3---3-----
g|-----2-------2-------2-------2-------0-------0---
d|---0-----------0---0-----------0---0-----------0-
a|-0---------------0---------------2---------------
E|-------------------------------------------------

  F#m G(III) A
e|---------2---------------3---------------0-------
b|-------2---2-----------3---3-----------2---2-----
g|-----2-------2-------4-------4-------2-------2---
d|---4-----------4---5-----------5---2-----------2-
a|-4---------------5---------------0---------------
E|-------------------------------------------------

and back to that first D chord.

Lyrics:

D G A
The concrete broke your fall
D G A

PARAKEET
here's my shot at "parakeet," which i think is the best song on UP. it's a great sound, great especially for halloween. it was kinda hard to get the chords considering that there is no guitar in this song (okay there might be some weird riffs played in the chorus), it's keyboard transcribed for guitar, so the chords might not be exactly right, but i think they're pretty close. i know that the bass notes are right, at least. if the chords don't sound right, try out power chords, those are alright in this song. in fact, there's one chord that i'm a little iffy on, and that's the C# in the verses. you be the judge. i'm pretty sure about the rest. enjoy.

here's that spooky-sounding riff that mike plays on the keyboard in the chorus:
d--1-2-4-5

        G F#m E
you wake up in the morning
       D C# E
and fall out of your bed
  D C# E
mean cats eat parakeets
  D C Eb
and this one's nearly dead.
  G F#m E
you dearly wish the wind shift
         D C# E
and greasy windows slide
  D C# E
open for the parakeet

(chords same as above)
a broken wrist, an accident
you know that something's wrong
you fold the leavings of your past
no one knows you've gone.
the sunspot flares of the early
nineties light up your wings.
and scan the shortwave radio
it's tracking outer range.

open the window
and lift into your dreams
baby, baby, you can start to breathe

the tectonic dispatcher shifts
to smooth the ocean floor
and flattens out to warmer winds
of brisbane's sunny shore.
where buddhas tend to mending wrists
a tea made from the leaves
of eucalyptus fragrances
and coriander seeds.

open your window
and lift into a dream
baby, baby, baby starts to breathe
open the window
and lift into a dream
baby, baby, baby starts to breathe

you wake up in the morning
to warm pacific breeze
where means cats chew on licorice
         D C G#m

end on some G#m riffs.
notes...i'm open to suggestions as to what that last chord is. it's really cool, and it's definetly a chord not used anywhere else in the song. okay, i think that's it.

EMPHYSEMA

this is a cool instrumental, and although there isn't any guitar on the track,
i went ahead and tabbed out the bass and organ or whatever that instrument
is -- accordian? moog synth? i don't know. a note about the tab: the way
its spaced and typed, the organ is above the bass, and the bass notes are
played wherever they're tabbed in relation to the organ -- if a bass note
is directly under an organ note, they're played at the same time. if it's
between two notes, well, i think you can figure it out. i didn't tab out
the organ for the bridge, i figured it'd be too much so i just typed something
else. i think that's it. questions? comments? David Wagner (wagner@mindspring.com)
