Here's how I play it when in my band
Sometimes, I will substitute 8th fret note for 3rd fret on the D string.  If I'm on 
stage and rocking out, it's easier to keep my hand there, but if I'm tired toward the end, I 
go up to the 8th for cleaner sound and the slide to it looks cool when I'm just standing around.
