Now Conor Oburst (singer and guitar player in the song) Plays with no picks, so if you would like to try this method out (if you don’t already know it) by using your index finger and your thumb by strumming down (/) with your index finger and up (^) with your thumb. Now for more advanced players you should try individual picking with both your index finger and your thumb, but try to get the same rhythm as Conor. If any of you losers (~.O) are going to use a pick, just strum the same direction as the strokes… But it might sound a little funny.
