• Song:

    Autumn Song

  • Artist:

    Harvey Andrews

4/4 time
Capo: none

Recorded by Harvey Andrews on Friends of Mine album in 1973. The song has an
ethereal feel to it and is played in the key of A minor. I suggest that it be
played in a light finger picking style with feeling.

The chord of G should be played throughout as shown in the tab diagram below to
help keep the minor mood of the song. The lower case notes 'c' and 'ae' are
intended to be played as single notes. The 'c' should be played as shown below on
the 4th beat of the measure which leads into the Am chord. The ae (an A5 chord) at
the end of the coda should be plucked together:

        ////    ////
   G C Am ae

Intro: Play Am a few times

     Am Dm
On a misty autumn morning
Am Dm
You can hear the wild birds call
G Am
  Giving chilly winter warning
E C Am
That the evening star will fall.

Am Dm
I feel the wind that sings their crying
Am Dm
I wish the dying sun goodbye
G Am
And I stand to see them flying
E C Am
To a warm and welcome sky.

Chorus:
      Am Dm
And I stay to meet cold winter
G E
To crunch the crackling ice and snow
F G
To walk alone beneath bare branches
E Am
And wonder why you had to go.

Am Dm
The empty rooms they echo laughter
Am Dm
The broken door creaks one more song
G Am
And in the silence that comes after
E C Am
The dusty floors, they ask 'how long?'

(Repeat chorus)
And I stay to meet... etc

Am Dm
Soon I'll find winter clothes to hold me
Am Dm
And wrap myself against the cold
G Am
But frost and fire, they never told me
E C Am
There is no peace in growing old.

Coda:
E ae (let ring)
There is no peace in growing ... old.
