John Renbourn has done this song in a few different ways. I've
chosen the version that he does as a member of Pentangle, from
the 'Cruel Sister' album from 1970, because I think it's the
simplest and the best.

This is fairly difficult to play while still
maintaining a smooth rhythm, as there are so many changes in the
fingerpicking pattern and rhythms within the song. Also, there's a
bit of a finger-stretch @ the 17th Bar.

As seems to be often the case, John has lowered his guitar one half step,
but is not difficult to sing in standard EBGdae, there not being many high
notes in the song, so I'll transcribe it thus.

There are some very tricky parts of this riff to fit within a 4/4 series of
bars, but I think I have got it pretty right (I think).

In 4/4 Time.

Rest of the verses:

With a hundred seamen we sailed away
To the frozen ocean in the month of May
To seek a passage around the Pole,
Where we poor sailors do sometimes go.

Through cruel hardships we vainly strove,
Our ship on mountains of ice was drove.
Only the Eskimo in his skin canoe,
The only one to ever come through.

In Baffin's Bay where the whale-fishes blow,
The fate of Franklin no man may know.
The fate of Franklin no tongue can tell.
Lord Franklin alone with his sailors do dwell.

And now my burden, it gives me pain.
For long lost Franklin, I would cross the main.
Ten thousand pounds I would freely give
To say on Earth that my Franklin lives.
