You need drop D tuning for this. It's kinda fiddly at points, with the rhythm changing but the riff still using the same notes, so I just tend to improvise a at points (largely because I can't hear exactly what the bass is doing). But, hey, that's part of the fun of playing :) Where I put > next to a note, it's because the rhythm doesn't always stay the same, or I can't quite figure out how many times that note's played :) Plus, I'm not too fussed about playing things exactly; if you want every note on every riff played exactly right, go see N'Sync or something. Part of the fun of live music is it's spontaneous nature. Anyway, I recommend that you don't use a pick for this. You'll struggle with the solo. Intro riff - "now it's time..." - x2 G|---------------- D|---------------- A|---------------- D|--888-888-777-777 "And on the first day..." - x2 G|-------------------------------- D|-------------------------------- A|---------------8---------------- D|--8>-88-88-88-8---7>-77-77-77-70 "Still you won't let go..." - x4 G|---------------- D|---------------- A|---------------- D|--88888-55550--- "We all sing..." - 10s and 12s. The rhythm's kinda akward here. x2 G|--------------------------- D|--------------------------- A|-8>-77-787---10>------12>-- D|-----------10-----1010----- "Rain rain down...." - the section after the slides is pretty fast, with 9s and 10s. x3 G|-777-7/210-99-1099-5>--4>----- D|--------------------------------- A|--------------------------------- D|--------------------------------- Back to "We all sing" riff. x2 Then to "And on the first day..." riff, up until the solo. x3 Solo - this section sounds inconsistent to me with it's timing, but this is the basic structure, as I play it. x3 G|-777-7/210-99-1099--5>--4>-------- D|-000-0-0-0--00-0-00--5>--4>-------- A|------------------------------------ D|------------------------------------ After the solo, you get the nice shouty bit. Because I normally sing the backing vocals along to this song, and because said vocals are so loud on this section on the record, it's hard to get the timing. So, improvise :) It's worth noting that the Abs (6 on the D string) are quite hard to catch, with only two or three being played each time. If you don't bother with them, I doubt many people will notice. x2 G|------------------ D|------------------ A|-5>-0>---8>-7>---- D|------6>---------- Second time, it goes G|---------------------- D|---------------------- A|-5>-0>---8>-7-8-7-8-7- D|------6>-------------- If you're in a mood for showing off, you can play it different to the record, like so: G|------------------- D|------------------- A|-5>-0>--8>-7>-787-- D|------6>----------10 (just like with the "we all sing" riff) Then, you're onto the final riff, woo! But, because there's so much going on here, I can never quite get the exact timing; so, again, improvise with it. I think the first time through, it finishes with D|-9-10-9- G|------------------------------- D|------------------------------- A|------------------------------- D|-0>-7>-3>10>-12>-9>----------- Finish on G|--- D|--- A|--- D|-7- And that should be everything. Any problems should only be minor ones, which can be easily solved by playing around a bit.
