------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Believe Intro - Staind off Illusion of Progress ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tabbed by: Jeff Maginniss Email: peridot203@gmail.com This is the correct tuning for the song, as Aaron has 2 guitars he peforms with, one 1/2 down and the other is a D-Modal hybrid (Epiphony, Believe, Falling, etc.) I know this correct because he showed us at the concert. Tuning: D-Modal, and then downtuned 1/2 step. D-Modal tuning used here is D-A-D-G-A-D, the same as the song "Epiphony" Once the 1/2 downtune is applied it's really Db-Ab-Db-Gb-Ab-Db Easiest way to tun this is to take standard tuning, drop it 1/2, then drop the low and high "E" strings a full step again, and drop the B string a full step as well. The result is an open chord that can be played across all strings. For reference: I have included standard tuning string names, with the actual tuning inside (Db), etc. This way you know which string to play, assuming you tuned correctly to the indicated notes. =========== Intro Gmaj F#m ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ E(Db)|-------0-------------------------|-------0---------------------------| B(Ab)|---0-------0--------0-------0----|---0-------0--------0-------0------| G(Gb)|-------------0--------0----------|-----------------------------------| D(Db)|-5---5---------4-/5-----4/5------|-4---4-------4-2-/4---4-2/4--------| A(Ab)|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------| E(Db)|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------| |-Let Ring----------------x |-Let Ring----------------x-| Gmaj A Bm ^ ^ ^ ^ E(Db)|-------0----------------0--------|------(5)---------------(5)--| B(Ab)|---0-------0----------0-----0----|--(5)-----(5)-(5)---(5)------| G(Gb)|--------------------2---------2--|-----------------------------| D(Db)|-5---5-------5----2--------------|(4)-(4)-----(4)---(4)-(4)----| A(Ab)|---------------------------------|-----------------------------| E(Db)|---------------------------------|-----------------------------| |-Ring---x |-Ring---------x-----------------------------| *All Touch Harmonics, let ring. | / slide up | \ slide down | ^ accent note on downstroke | h hammer-on | p pull-off | ~ vibrato | + harmonic | x Mute note =============================================================================== Notes: The Key to Staind / Aaron Lewis type songs is that it must be simple by way of tuning. Most of the time, the guitars are in 1/2 step downtuning. A few of his songs, including Epiphony and some newer ones are using this hybrid D-Modal tuning. I picked up on the harmonics, which are relatively impossible to play as when the guitar was tuned to what I have below. I have several guitars, and one of them was already tuned to play Epiphony anyway, and when I tried the harmonics it fit like a glove. If you are trying to tab or figure out a Staind or Aaron Lewis song, and you end up with lots of 466, 688 or 133 chords, it's most likely your tuning is off. Always try to simplify chords. If you can't find a way to play it open stringed then try downtuning to round down to 355, or 0232 or open C/D/G/A chords, etc.
